Q&A
Who are you?
I'm Rocco, founder / developer of an WebGL games website called simmer.io. My 7-year, 140,000 user community was gone in an instant after my Firebase project got hit by a one-day DoS attack.
What's your story?
24 hours, $97,000.A 6000x deviation from my normal daily usage. Billing alerts were on and but came in after tens of thousands of damage occurred.$10,000 in customer refunds. My business is gone and there are no second chances.I'm still working with GCP on the bill.
Is this a skeezy Class Action Lawsuit Page?
No.I view lawsuits as a last resort. They are stressful and painful for all involved. This site will be an advocacy group and a platform to provide support, share stories, and elevate products that do offer true billing caps.
What clouds offer billing limits?
None of the big ones.❌ Amazon Web Services (AWS)
❌ Google Cloud (GCP) / Firebase
⚠️ Microsoft Azure*
⚠️ Cloudflare*** Azure offers capped billing on certain starter accounts.
** Cloudflare lacks capped billing on R2, Workers.Sources:
AWS, GCP, Azure, Cloudflare
Smaller providers?
Nope.❌ Netlify
❌ Render
⚠️ Digital Ocean** Digital Ocean offers fixed pricing but does not offer caps on network egress charges.Sources
Netlify, Render, Digital Ocean
Anybody?
My research tells me that these providers offer some spending caps.✅ Vercel
✅ Heroku
✅ Backblaze B2 Storage
⚠️ Supabase** Supabase offers spending caps on unpredictable resources only. Please do your own research on how to enable these spending caps.Sources
Vercel, Heroku, Backblaze, Supabase
I have god-like programming and ops skills and this will never happen to me.
No you don't.
Couldn't a spending limit break my project?
Yes. All kinds of awful cascading effects could occur. However as a consumer of cloud resources, we deserve a choice.
Cloud providers are very forgiving about this kind of thing.
That's confirmation bias. Yes, you've read stories about forgiveness that have gone viral. Are you ready to roll the dice?
What will you do with my email address?
I don't know yet.I will not publish or sell your email address. The goal is to provide support and solutions to help solve this problem, and apply pressure to cloud providers help us to use their services more safely. There will be an unsubscribe link in every email.
What can I do?
Tell your story.Upvote posts about other people's stories.Leave me a note if you want to become more deeply involved.Migrate to services with better cost control.
Is this a commercial project?
Not yet, but I won't rule that out.I'm building a community here to support those affected by these billing practices. It's a litmus test to help me understand the scope and depth of the problem.
